Najaar 1941, La Rochelle aan de Franse kust: 50 Duitse militairen drinken zich zat en maken plezier in een Franse nachtclub. Voor hen kan dit de laatste keer zijn, aangezien ze de volgende morgen aan boord van een onderzeeër zullen gaan, om zo veel mogelijk vijandelijke schepen tot zinken te brengen. Naarmate de U-96 op de Atlantische Oceaan vordert, neemt de verveling drastisch toe. Wanneer echter na lange tijd de vijandelijke schepen in zicht komen, slaat de verveling van de mannen om in angst en heimwee naar de thuishaven.
